GE Lighting Betters the Compact Fluorescent Bulb

The one thing people dislike about Compact Fluorescent Lights, now that they’re mostly not mercury laden anymore, is their low initial brightness upon turn-on.

With that in mind, GE Lighting has added a small halogen capsule inside their new hybrid halogen-CFL bulbs, making them turn on instantly to a high level of brightness.

Once the CFL side of things is up and running at full strength, the halogen capsule turns off. Mercury levels are also very low, at 1mg, compared to 1.5 to 3.5mg for most CFLs.

First on the shelves will be 15 and 20-watt versions, which are equivalent to 60 and 75-watt incandescent bulbs, while having an 8,000 hour life expectancy, which is eight times that of incandescent.
